Hardcore Norfolk: A Story of Rock 'n' Roll Survival
Saturday 9:15 p.m., Regal 2 Downtown Mall
2011. USA. 106 min. Directors: Debra Persons, Paul Unger, and Andrea Rizzo.
What is it about the transient naval town of Norfolk, Virginia that has brought such musical nastiness to the world? The film explores the birthplace of the Norfolk Sound, with its founding fathers, Frank Guida of LaGrande Records and Noah Biggs of the grittier Shiptown Records, at the helm. One pioneered the squeaky clean rock & roll emulated by The Beatles, while the other was steeped in northern soul that the area is still noted for in international circles. From rock & roll, to punk, to anti-punk, to garage, Norfolk is a quiet giant of rock music.
