Giuseppe Verdi, Overture to La forza del destino
Fate lies at the heart of Verdi’s tragic opera. An ominous three-note motif opens The Power of Destiny, symbolizing the working of fate on the destiny of the opera’s principal characters. The overture is one of Verdi’s best and features some of his most dramatic music.
Jonathan Russell, Adagio from the Double Concerto for Clarinet, Cello and Orchestra
Two of the Charlottesville Symphony’s principal musicians are featured in this slowly unfolding, lyrical first movement from a larger work.
Artie Shaw, Concerto for Clarinet
The orchestra swings in a work infused with jazz and boogie-woogie blues while soloist Jiyeon Choi shows off the versatility of the clarinet.
Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphony No. 5
Another famous fate motif appears in the opening four notes of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, arguably one of the most iconic works in the symphonic repertoire. Beethoven’s biographer thought the recurring theme resembled fate knocking at the door.
